MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Memphis officer is being hailed a hero after he delivered a baby in the backseat of a car, and revived the infant after the umbilical cord was wrapped around the child's neck.
On Friday, February 22 around 2 a.m., Memphis DUI Officer Anthony Morris was on routine patrol in the area of American Way and Cherry Rd when he was flagged down by a woman in distress. When he walked up to the woman's car, he saw another woman was in labor in the backseat.
Officer Morris contacted emergency personnel, who walked him through the delivery of the baby. As the infant was being delivered the umbilical cord was wrapped around the neck, and Morris was instructed on how to free the child and ensure proper breathing.
An ambulance arrived on the scene shortly after the delivery and transported the mother and baby to Methodist Germantown. Both are expected to be fine.
Officer Morris, 46, has been with the Memphis Police Department since 1994. He will be nominated for a Lifesaving Award for his actions.
An MPD spokesperson stated, "Good job by Officer Morris and thanks to him for the outstanding efforts to assist our community; over and beyond his call of duty."
